From Silicon Valley, advice for graduates

From Silicon Valley, advice for graduates

Now, here’s an article by a graduating senior who’s going to go places.  She’s right on point.  I especially like some of the advice she received from an informational interview “None of the people I interviewed talked about how being smart got them where they are now. Instead, they talked about being curious about the world and wanting to learn as much as they could about it. They were not trying to succeed so they could feel good about themselves. They were humble.”  Spot on!

College Graduates’ Expectations Are Out Of Line with Reality, Says Study

College Graduates’ Expectations Are Out Of Line with Reality, Says Study

It’s hard to say how the results of a Silicon Valley-focused survey would compare to these results.  It’s interesting, nevertheless.

Interview Tips for Millennials

Managers to Millennials: Job Interview No Time to Text

I found this to be an interesting yet disconcerting article.  It’s hard to fathom that some Millennials’ behavior could be so off-base during job interviews.  If someone’s behavior is inappropriate during the interview process (Millennial or not), it’s easy to assume his or her behavior and decision-making would be in question if an employee.  It becomes a quick and easy decision — do not hire!

I like that the author refers to an interview as “still a traditional environment” as well as a “sales event.”  Like a good sales person, know your audience.  Show-up on time.  Dress, behave and speak in the most appropriate, professional and effective manner.  Then you’ll have a chance to close the deal.

From a talk I gave in October 2012

I spoke at CodeCamp held at Foothill College in October 2012.  This is an annual educational event for software developers.  Roughly 3,000 people attended various sessions over the weekend.  I was interviewed by David Spark (www.sparkmediasolutions.com) after giving my talk which was titled “For New Managers: How to Be a ‘Good Boss.'”  David posted the interview and some of the information I covered on the CodeCamp website.  Thank you, David!

How People Change

How People Change

If you missed David Brooks’ 11/27/12 piece about the “Crews Missile,” it speaks directly to creating new positive habits (rewiring the brain) rather than focusing on the undesired behavior.  He shares a father’s bizarre tale as well.  It’s yet another reminder to be careful what you put in email!

Shawn Achor’s The Happy Secret to Better Work

This is one of my favorite TEDX talks.  What he’s talking about, in essence, is our ability to re-wire our brains to focus on the positive.  Enjoy.

Giving Thanks for Thanksgiving

We are wiser and happier when we give thanks each day for what we accomplished, experienced, and all that we have to be grateful for.  How much time does this take, two minutes perhaps?  We are reminded, often painfully, how precious life is.  However, it’s our default to focus on the difficult, stressful, and overwhelming aspects of life.  Now is a great time to create a new habit to focus on the positive.

Here’s to being present and focused and to giving thanks for all we have to be grateful for.  To quote a wise coach colleague, remember to “thank yourself, you’re a very important person in your life!”

Have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!

What Successful People Do With The First Hour Of Their Work Day

I have some coffee first thing!  Although I know reading email first thing is not good for our productivity or peace of mind, I’ve not been able to break the habit.  Read what others do first thing . . .
